Virtual reality

What is virtual reality?

This entails an artificial environment created by a computer, wherein the patient is able to identify himself and to operate within it. This substantially simulates the real world. The software is evaluating the moves of the patient and visualize them in the virtual environment, in order to evoke the patient to make particular moves.

This technique opens a wide scope for new therapy methods for stroke patients. It represents a new way of rehabilitation through an entertainment environment. It promotes and encourages the patient’s involvement in their own treatment with maximum results.

Adapted to the patient’s individual needs, this helps the rehabilitation physician to achieve the treatment goals established for his patient. This is a fantastic world of treatment and rehabilitation.

This affects involuntary movements, i.e. those that are performed unconsciously and automatically, as well as conscious reactions and behaviors. Sensory stimuli of virtual reality create muscle contractions and movements that are effective in balance and proprioception training and especially regarding motion on the hemiplegic side for stroke patients.

Virtual reality therapy departments have been established internationally. One of them is the University of Chicago, which has created a virtual staging environment section and an orientation of the body in space.

Let’s conclusively explore the advantages of this new therapeutic rehabilitation technology.

  1. It adapts perfectly to each patient’s needs and abilities and allows personalized exercises, according to the goals of their respective treatments.
  2. We can easily change the level of difficulty for the exercises being configured.
  3. In other words, this operates interactively, connecting the patient to an artificial world, the virtual reality world, and this, in turn, communicates with the patient.
  4. This technology enables us to measure the patient’s performance and assess it objectively.
  5. This virtual environment quickly becomes friendly and familiar to the patient.
  6. It operates via a therapeutic context of entertainment.
  7. This stimulates and encourages the patient’s treatment.

The new technology works in a secure environment and offers new therapeutic experiences. It is a smart and effective rehabilitation tool.
